8 Tips for University Exam Success

Students sat down taking university exams

University exam season is officially here, which usually means stress, cramming, and promising yourself that this time you’ll start revising early. After nearly three years of being a student at University of Sussex, I’ve learnt the hard way what actually helps during university exams - and what just adds to the stress.

Whether you love exams or completely dread them, these are the habits that have genuinely helped me get through university exam season without burning out.

1. First Things: Do Not Panic

This sounds obvious, but it is the most important one. Panicking never helps - it only makes everything feel harder. Personally, when I am stressed, my work output suffers and I remember less, which is not ideal during exams. Take a breath, remind yourself that university exams are temporary, and focus on what you can control.

2. Consistency ALWAYS Beats Last-Minute Cramming

Doing a little bit often is so much better than having to do a revision all-nighter. Planning your revision time and topics makes a huge difference. This is where your calendar and notes app become your best friends (they are certainly mine during this time of year). Even a loose plan helps you feel more in control and stops revision from feeling overwhelming.

3. Find a Revision Space that Actually Works for You

Where you revise matters more than you think. Some people love their university library or Student Hub, whilst others study better at home. My personal favourite is a local café with a warm drink - especially during colder months. It makes revision feel less miserable and more productive. Find somewhere that helps you focus and stick with it.

4. Understand the Exam Before You Revise

Before diving into revision, make sure you understand what the exam actually involves. Look at past papers if they are available, check the format, and understand how you are being marked. If anything is unclear, ask - lecturers are always happy to help.

Practising questions is one of the best ways to revise. If you run out of questions, ask friends on your course if they have made any of their own. Sharing answers and discussing them helps everyone improve.

5. Use Revision Methods that Suit You

As someone with a terrible memory, repetition is what works best for me. I will write things out, say them out loud, or try teaching them to someone else until I fully understand them.

Other great revision methods include:

  •  Mind maps
  •  Study groups
  •  Blurting
  •  Flashcards
  •  Post it notes – I put them everywhere, even in the shower!
  •  Mnemonics and rhymes

There is no right way to revise. Don’t copy what everyone else is doing - people learn differently. The best method is whatever that helps you remember and understand the content.

6. Take Breaks - They Are Not Optional

Working non-stop does not equal productive revision. Regular breaks help you focus better and avoid burnout. Step away for a short walk, grab a drink, or just reset your mind before you start again.

7. Look After Your Wellbeing

Your wellbeing matters just as much as your revision. Most universities offer wellbeing support, skills sessions, and extra resources during exam periods, so it’s worth checking what’s available.

Outside of studying, doing something active can really help. The gym, a walk through your local park or beach, or even a short walk around your area can make a big difference. And yes, sometimes a little retail therapy doesn’t hurt either.

8. Make the Most of Your Campus

Your university has more support than you might realise, especially during exam season.

  • The library: quiet revision spaces, essay resources, and a focused atmosphere.
  • The gym: moving your body helps reduce stress and clear your mind.
  • Student centre: advice, wellbeing support, and guidance for what comes after exams.
  • Student union & campus food spots: a change of scene, social time, and proper meals make revision feel much more manageable.

University exams are tough, but they do not define you. Do your best, be kind to yourself, and remember that this period will pass. Find what works for you, stay consistent, and don’t forget to look after yourself along the way.

Good luck to everyone in exam season - you’ve got this!
