Black History Month: How Community and Mentorship Shape Careers

This Black History Month, we’re highlighting the diverse experiences, perspectives and career journeys that help make Enterprise Mobility a stronger, more inclusive organisation. The theme is “Honouring Our Communities,” celebrating the power of representation, connection and belonging.

Amos
Corporate Rental Manager | U.K.

Born and raised in South London, Amos is proud of his Ugandan heritage and the family values that shaped him. He began his Enterprise Mobility journey as a Management Trainee Intern in West Croydon in 2014. After graduating and returning as a Management Trainee, he progressed through a number of leadership roles before becoming Corporate Rental Manager for Enterprise Car Club UK & Ireland, based at European Headquarters in Egham.

Reflecting on the theme of Honouring Our Communities, Amos credits the people who supported him throughout his career.

"I've been fortunate to have a strong village around me throughout my life, both professionally and personally," he explains. Growing up, mentors, family members, friends and colleagues encouraged him to grow while remaining true to himself.

"They challenged me to grow while also reminding me that it was okay to be my authentic self." Amos believes graduates should recognise the value of their own experiences and perspectives.

"Your background, perspective and experiences are part of what you bring to the table," Amos says. "They're not things you need to minimise or explain away." Having benefited from mentorship throughout his career, he is passionate about supporting others.

"If you can, pay it forward through mentoring, a conversation, or simply offering a helping hand," he advises. "You never know the impact you might have on someone's journey. You may end up becoming part of their village."

The eldest daughter of British Jamaican parents, Emily was raised by her grandmothers, who instilled the values of faith, community and hospitality that continue to guide her today. Encouraged by those around her to pursue new opportunities, she joined Enterprise Mobility after university and a short career in banking. Over the past five years, Emily has progressed from Management
Trainee to Assistant Manager
roles at Heathrow and Luton Airports before being
promoted to Branch Manager in Welwyn Garden City.

One of Emily's proudest achievements has been creating a branch culture where people feel comfortable bringing their authentic selves to work. "They showed me that leadership is not just about results. It is about understanding people, recognising their potential and investing time in them." Inspired by the managers and mentors who supported her development, Emily hopes to have the same impact on others. She encourages people who are starting their careers to be confident in what they bring to the table.

"Trust that you belong in the spaces you enter and believe in yourself," Emily advises. “Your individuality can be your greatest strength."

Osman
Branch Manager | Ireland

Born in Ireland to a Sudanese mother and Moroccan father, Osman grew up in a community with very little ethnic diversity. He joined Enterprise Mobility in 2022 as a Management Trainee shortly after graduating and quickly progressed into leadership roles. Today, he is a Branch Manager in Drogheda, Ireland.

Working in different locations introduced Osman to people from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures. "Those experiences broadened my perspective and showed me how diverse the world really is."

Osman has seen first-hand how representation can make a difference. While managing a branch in western Ireland, he noticed Black customers from the local community felt encouraged seeing someone who looked like them in a leadership role.

"It helped build trust and strengthened relationships," he recalls. “It showed people that there are opportunities available to them and that they belong."

His advice to graduates and early career professionals is simple: "Do not let fear of other people's assumptions or biases hold you back," he says. “In every situation, do your best, work hard, and treat people with the same respect that you would want to receive yourself. Stay confident and don't be afraid to put yourself forward for opportunities."
